THE LEVERIAN // ALCOVE 11 · The speed frame — a battery charged by every stride

Gauss

The speed frame whose every stride charges a kinetic battery — remembered as the Saint of Altra, who outran a minefield's own detonations to retake a fortress that soldiers could not.

AS THE LEVERIAN TELLS IT
And Gauss — a smear of light, just ahead of the thermal avalanche — fast as fire. No... faster.

The First Exhibit

Gauss carries a distinction the archive is fond of: he was the first frame Drusus ever hung in the Leverian. The whole selective hall of the historian's began with him, in 2019 — which makes this alcove the first place in the wing where the archive gets to quote Drusus rather than stand in for him.

What he is, is speed made into a machine. A kinetic battery fills as he moves and empties into everything he does; stop running and the frame goes dim. Drusus, characteristically, does not explain the engineering. He tells a story instead.

The Saint of Altra

Altra was an Orokin tower-fortress on Ceres — blastcrete emplacements, air sentries, and fields sown so thick with tremor mines that it was built never to fall. It fell anyway, to an insurgency from within. When the Orokin sent their Dax to take it back, the soldiers were undone in the minefield before they ever reached the walls.

Then they called in Gauss. He ran the killing ground faster than the ground could kill him — a smear of light just ahead of the blast-wave rising to meet the tower — and won Altra back where an army could not. For that he is remembered as the Saint of Altra. Drusus reads the rest of him through his gear: the Akarius drawn from Altra's bunkers, the Acceltra, the stripped-out airfoils, and a syandana bearing an old Dax proverb — that a thing which cannot be hit cannot be killed.

(The historian ends with a wink the archive keeps: wherever some evidence of one fleet-footed saint is found, he says, a trace of Grendel is sure to be near. He never says why.)
