Inaros

The legend of Inaros is told as a bedtime story — a colonist mother on Mars, calming a frightened child. Once, she says, the colony's lands were soaked in fear, and Inaros was not their king but their enemy: a warrior of the Golden Skymen, the masters who came down and stole the colony's children away. With each child taken he grew angrier, until the night he turned on his own masters.

They set their armies on him and none could stand. He commanded the sand; he commanded death; he ate their fear and grew larger on it. Broken, the Skymen abandoned the colony and took its terror with them, and Inaros became the people's king — rising in a great whirlwind of sand to watch over them from a throne in the sky. They laid his body in sacred vessels in the Martian ground and told their children he would wake again when he was needed.

The tale has a floor that drops out of it. The child being soothed is Baro Ki'Teer, and the voice telling the story is his mother, long dead. Inaros never came. Baro's colony was not saved by any god-king; it was destroyed by the Grineer, and the Void-Trader he became is what grief and commerce made of the survivor. When he sends the Tenno to dig the frame's pieces out of the desert, he is not raising an army. He is trying, at last, to believe the story.

The archive keeps two honesties beside the myth. The "Golden Skymen" are never named as the Orokin in the telling — the identification is a reasonable reading, not a stated fact. And the "deathless god" is faith, not proof: the frame endures like the shifting sand, but the man it remembers did not keep the one promise the story was told to make.
