The Stalker

For eleven years this record could have opened with a question — who is the Stalker? — and closed it with a shrug. It no longer can, and the change is entered below. Begin instead with what never needed a name: the death mark. Kill certain of the system's tyrants and a message finds you, sender marked only as ???: your actions have consequences. Then, without warning, in the middle of some unrelated errand, a dark warframe walks out of the room's shadow wielding a mirror of your own arsenal, and tells you he is your reckoning.

He is not Grineer, not Corpus, not Infested, and not Tenno. He belongs to no faction because he appointed himself to a cause older than all of them. He names himself the ghost of retribution. The archive, which has watched him work, does not find the title inflated.

His grievance is the founding crime of the modern age, seen from the losing side. When the Old War ended, the Tenno appeared at the Terminus, gleaming and victorious, and the Orokin honored them: ten ceremonial Naga drumbeats, a royal salute, ten solemn beats to declare the suffering over. He watched from a distance, among the low Guardians — the caste that served the golden lords and was never permitted to be more than furniture at their triumphs. He felt the terror rise with each beat, tried to call out, and managed only a strangled whisper.

On the ninth beat the Tenno drew their blades and turned them on the masters who were thanking them. The drums stopped. The Empire stopped. He did not. Where the rest of the system remembers that hour as liberation, he remembers it as the murder he failed to prevent, and he has spent every year since making the case that no Tenno who profited from it is innocent. It is the rare grudge in this archive that is entirely, verifiably correct about the facts, and entirely alone in its verdict.

For a long age he hunted with weapons of his own dark craft: the bow Dread, the daggers Despair, the scythe Hate — a shadow's answer to every blade the Tenno carry. Then, from the bottom of a Uranus ocean, something older than his grudge reached up to meet it. Hunhow, the Sentient father below, had his own reason to want the Tenno unmade, and in the hour of The Second Dream he put the Stalker a question that was really an offer: who do you hunt, Shadow, to cleanse your despair in their blood?

Hunhow gave him three things. Purpose, sharpened to a point: the Tenno's hidden truth, the sleeping children in their reservoir. Passage: the Stalker could go where a Sentient could not, into the womb in the sky forbidden to Hunhow's kind. And a sword — War, bestowed from the seabed, housing the old Sentient's own consciousness at its edge. So armed, he became the Shadow Stalker, gifted with Sentient adaptation: the same maddening resistance that made the armada so hard to kill, worn now by one relentless man. The alliance ended as such things end in this archive. War shattered at the climax of the quest, leaving the Broken War behind, and the secret it was sent to sever survived anyway.

And now the name. For over a decade the only attested fact about who he had been was a caste — a low Guardian — and the archive, with everyone else, held the rest as an open question. Jade Shadows closed it. He was Sorren, and his first crime was not against the Tenno at all. He loved a Warframe named Jade, against a law that forbade it, and they made a child. The masters he defended so faithfully would not have forgiven him either. The archive notes the shape of that, and the terrible symmetry it makes with everything above, without editorial.

What the quest gave, past a name, was an ending that refuses to be one. The Shadow fled — Hunhow's own farewell records it: the Shadow has fled, his lair silent and empty, he will not return — carrying his newborn son out of the story that had trapped him. He returns to the system still, when a death mark calls him, but stripped now of the Sentient gifts: the Protector Stalker, reverted to the hunter he was before the seabed found him. Let the record be exact, because it is tempting to round this into redemption and it is not one. He is a father now, and he is still hunting. The two facts have not yet learned to share a man.
