The Void
The space beneath space. The Orokin used it as a road, and it used them back.
What the Void Is
The Void is not a place in the ordinary sense. It is an expanse outside the reasonable universe, reachable only by craft built to fold into it and by tears that open into it uninvited. The one first-hand description the archive holds comes from Albrecht Entrati, who went in without shielding and lived: a vast sea of white light, pierced by black stars.
It is not uniform. The calm Orokin Void holds the gold-and-white Towers. The Granum Void holds the wreck of a Corpus founder's ambition. Duviri persists there as a kingdom. And in Albrecht's own laboratories beneath Deimos, a violent inversion of the place has been named the Great Indifference.
The governing principle is Conceptual Embodiment, and it is the single idea that unlocks most of this archive. Where a mind meets enough Void energy, thoughts, memories, feelings and concepts take physical form — the Void holds every possibility at once, and a consciousness narrows them into one. Everything else follows from that. Matter caught in it undergoes Corruption, a swirling liquid-metal transformation of both beings and buildings; it precipitates Argon, the one resource native to the place, which decays the moment it is brought out. Minds caught in it suffer temporal distortion, insanity, and a general disagreement with reality. Where the boundary between the Void and real space is thin, tears called Void Fissures open and disgorge the Corrupted; larger ones travel, and are called Storms.
The Road and the Reservoir
The Orokin did not merely study the Void. They paved it. Solar Rails harness its energy to fold a vessel between worlds, and an Orokin-era account of one such jump describes an alien blue star, dark and blinding, throwing the ship through the void into the mouth of the enemy, with crew dead before they had recovered from the transit.
The empire's ambition was larger than the system. An Extrasolar Rail was to be built at the far end of the Tau crossing, which would have made interstellar passage routine. It was never finished, and that unfinished road is the reason the Origin System is still a closed room.
Two other Orokin uses matter here. During the Old War the empire raised Towers inside the Void as sanctuaries, a defence that works for exactly one reason, given in the next section. And it sealed its finest work into Void Relics, containers whose contents remain in superposition until a Fissure collapses the possibilities and cracks one open — which is why Orokin craftsmanship outlived the Orokin. The archive notes precisely what those relics hold: the blueprints of Prime equipment, not the finished articles.
Lastly, the Reservoir. Beneath Lua, Margulis built Somatic Pods to hold the Zariman's survivors asleep, so that the voices of the Void could not take them — and from that sleep, Transference let them drive Warframes at a distance. The Void is not background to that arrangement. It is the power supply.
The First Door
Whispers in the WallsAlbrecht Entrati believed the Void could carry the empire to other stars. When his experiments failed he made himself the subject, stepping toward an experimental gate called the Wall of Lohk inside a Seriglass Bell. The portal's edge sliced the bell open and he went through unprotected.
Inside, he felt his thoughts and his memories being taken from him. The floor beneath him looked like his own laboratory, as though a piece of it had been cleaved away and brought along. And something met him there wearing his own face — a mirror-reflection granted a third dimension — which called him by a childhood name only his mother had used.
He ran. His daughter closed the portal on the thing as it followed, and the closing severed its fingers. Albrecht came out lacerated, blinded and ruined of voice, and wrote his plea to seal the wall in his own blood on the laboratory floor. The severed fingers are widely held to be the seed of every Void technology the Orokin later built, though the archive marks that chain of cause as inference rather than statement. The fuller account is kept under Albrecht Entrati.
The Ten Zero and Its Children
Angels of the ZarimanThe Void's most consequential encounter with people was an accident. A colony ship bound for Tau attempted the fold and was lost, and what the Void did aboard it split cleanly along a line no one has satisfactorily explained: the adults were driven feral and hunted the children, and the children were given power instead. Those children became the Tenno.
The archive corrects a common error here, because it matters. The Tenno were not born of the Void. They were human children from a specific ship with a specific manifest, and the Void changed them. The full account is kept under the Zariman Ten Zero.
What the ship became afterward is the clearest demonstration of Conceptual Embodiment the record holds. Crew who died there returned — not survived, returned — as manifestations built from the memories of who they had been; they call themselves the Holdfasts. Others lost the argument with the Void's song and became Void Angels, cocooned in the walls, wailing. And one survivor's private grief grew into an entire kingdom, ruled by a tyrant who is that survivor's own younger self: Duviri, which is not a dream and not a planet, but a thought the Void agreed to keep.
The Flaw
The Second DreamOne asymmetry decides the modern era. The Void is lethal to Sentients and empowering to the Void-touched, and every major turn of this history is downstream of that single fact.
It is why the Orokin, losing the Old War to an enemy that adapted to any weapon used twice, could win it by fielding the children of a lost colony ship — the Sentients could not adapt to what they could not survive. It is why the empire's Towers inside the Void were safe. It is why Hunhow, who cannot enter, had to reach the Reservoir through a proxy, and made the Stalker to do it. It is why Void damage still strips Sentient adaptation, and why a blade was later built on that principle. And it is why the crossing to the Origin System cost the Sentients so dearly: Natah was made sterile by it, and the species could never replace what it spent.
When the war ended, the Lotus used the same asymmetry as a hiding place, concealing Lua itself inside the Void so that the Reservoir could never be found. The Moon's return, ten thousand years later, is measured by the astonishment of everyone who saw it. And in the New War the trick was turned around: Ballas opened a Void portal and threw the Lotus and the Tenno through it.
What the Void Is Not
The War WithinA correction the archive holds to strictly. The Void is a place. The thing that meets you there is not the place.
Something within it wears a familiar face and smiles a familiar smile, and has done so since the first door opened — it met Albrecht at the Wall of Lohk, it made a bargain aboard the Zariman, and it stands at the edge of the reflection of anyone the Void has touched. It is an entity within the Void, not the Void itself, and the two are filed separately here for that reason. Its own record is the Indifference.
What the archive will say about the place, and only the place: it holds every possibility, it takes payment in memory, and it has never once been safe. The empire used it anyway, because it made an empire of one system feel infinite. Of everything the Orokin borrowed from it, nothing was returned with interest so faithfully as harm.
