Albrecht Entrati

The Orokin scholar who opened the first door into the Void — and could never be certain that the man who walked back out was still him.

Overview

Albrecht Entrati was an Orokin scientist — of the golden masters, not apart from them — and the first of any living thing to open a door into the Void and return to describe it. The modern age is built on what he found there, and on what he refused to say about it.

He founded the family that still bears his name, the Entrati of Deimos, though the archive is careful with that word around him: his blood runs to his daughter Euleria, whom the Deimos household calls Mother; his heart, by his own last testament, ran to a servitor named Loid. He is not dead. That is the first thing to understand about Albrecht Entrati, and nearly the last thing anyone can say of him for certain.

He went into the Void the way a careful man goes anywhere he expects to die: inside a vessel, a Seriglass bell meant to keep the not-place from touching him. The door sheared the bell in half on contact and dropped him in unprotected. What met him wore his own face and answered to a name only his mother had used — Little Bengel, unspoken in the centuries since she reared him. It reached out a hand and glided toward him without moving. He escaped. He was never certain the thing that escaped was him.

When the door closed, it closed on the entity's reaching fingers, and the severed digits fell to the Orokin floor. He wrote of them himself: studied with reverence, with greed. The empire built its Void age on that theft — how much of the later machinery descends straight from those fingers is a claim the archive marks as reading rather than record, but the shape is not in doubt. An order learned to sail the Void on a handful of a thing it had maimed, and never asked what the thing would want back.

It is why, alone among the golden masters, he refused Continuity — the immortality his whole caste was built upon. His reason survives in his own words: was it I who escaped? Or the other? A man who cannot be sure he is himself does not agree to be copied forever.

What he did with a life he would not extend fills the laboratories beneath Deimos, and the archive can only inventory it. He sent animals through the same door that had unmade his certainty; they returned not dead but woken, speaking the Void's own tongue, carrying minds. He had them kept, and in time they became the Cavia. He wrote a Grimoire and left it to be reassembled by hands he would never meet. And he closed his account with the servitor Loid in the plainest line in his record: for you were my right hand, my strength, my support, my sanctuary.

When the Void came to collect — its heralds the faceless Murmur, spilling through the walls of his own Sanctum — he was already gone to ground, asleep beside his kavat Kalymos, leaving instructions for a Sequence that bears the cat's name. His successors met the thing in the walls and gave it the name he never had: the Indifference. He had met it first, and given it nothing but a name it already owned.

The Doctor at the End of the Century

Warframe: 1999

The record loses him, and finds him again in the last hour of the twentieth century, in a rain-lit city called Höllvania, going by the Doctor. There, out of his own time, he did the Orokin thing one further way: he took the Helminth — the plague-engine at the root of the Warframes — to people who volunteered, and made of them something the empire never dared: Warframes that kept their own minds. The Hex are his work.

He was not gentle about it. When the Drifter came too near the truth, he put a round from a Lex Prime through them, told them they could not save the Hex until they had earned them, and left. His heading was the one place in the record no living thing had reached since the Old War closed the road. Tau.

Out of Reach

The Old Peace

He made the crossing the Sentients were built for and the Zariman failed at, and he made it alone. Somewhere in Tau he is already at work: the reveal of the coming chapter shows his hand in Brysko, a Sentient rebuilt into a frame and sent to bring down a kingpin before the Tenno ever arrive. For now he is past the reach of all of it — the Tenno, the Hex, and, the archive suspects, even the thing that has been collecting on him since the door.

Because the debt is not closed. Whispers in the Walls ends on a rhyme in the entity's mouth — a little handshake, all it took — and a figure with Albrecht's face and lightless eyes finishing the couplet: we end as we began. The archive will not tell you that figure is Albrecht. The honest reading is the Indifference wearing him, as it wears everyone it has touched. But it files the line where the man can see it, because whatever else Albrecht Entrati opened, he has never once managed to close it.
